TSC to Promote 45,000 Teachers in November, Confirms KUPPET.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is set to announce promotions for 45,000 teachers in November, addressing long-term stagnation among many educators. According to the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), the promotion process opens for applications on the TSC portal, giving priority to teachers who have remained in the same job group for over five years. Interviews for eligible candidates will commence in mid-November 2024.
KUPPET Secretary-General Akello Misori called on branch leaders to help identify approximately 1,000 senior teachers who have faced career stagnation for over a decade. By doing so, these teachers can finally receive fair treatment and advancement opportunities. Misori emphasized, “KUPPET has urged TSC to prioritize around 1,000 senior teachers who have been in the same job group for more than ten years. I ask branch leaders to identify these teachers so they can secure justice from their employer.”

The challenges surrounding career progression have long concerned educators. Many teachers believe the current Career Progression Guidelines (CPGs) have hindered their ability to advance in the profession. TSC and KUPPET have been in ongoing discussions to revise these guidelines, aiming to remove barriers and foster growth. According to Misori, the commission has made considerable headway in revamping the CPGs to streamline promotional pathways, allowing teachers to advance more efficiently.

KUPPET plans to provide feedback on the revised CPGs, set to roll out in January 2025. Misori expressed optimism, stating, “The commission has made significant strides in updating the CPGs that have caused stagnation in the teaching profession. KUPPET will soon offer input on the new guidelines, which will reduce the number of promotional grades and enable faster career progression for teachers. The commission will release the finalized guidelines in December and implement them in January 2025.”
In conclusion, TSC’s Promotion of 45,000 Teachers in November, along with the new CPG guidelines, brings a fresh wave of hope for Kenya’s educators. In addition, the planned changes aim to address long-standing career stagnation and foster a more dynamic teaching profession in Kenya.
