TSC Leadership Transition: Eveleen Mitei Takes Over as Acting CEO.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has appointed Eveleen Mitei as Acting CEO, following Dr. Nancy Macharia’s terminal leave. Macharia, who has led the commission since 2015, will officially retire on June 30, 2025.
In an internal memo dated June 1, 2025, Macharia announced her departure, urging staff to support Mitei during the transition. She emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism and commitment to the commission’s core values.
Macharia’s tenure saw major reforms in teacher recruitment, policy implementation, and education standards. However, her exit comes amid legal challenges surrounding the selection of her successor.
The Employment and Labour Relations Court in Mombasa has halted the TSC CEO recruitment process. The suspension follows a petition by Thomas Mosomi Oyugi, who alleges constitutional violations and discriminatory criteria in the hiring process.
Justice Ocharo Kebira ruled that the status quo as of May 27, 2025, must be maintained until further court orders. The case will be heard inter partes on June 9, 2025.
