TSC Recruitment: Over 314,000 Teachers Compete for 46,000 Positions
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) recently announced 46,000 job vacancies, sparking fierce competition among unemployed teachers. By October 1, 314,117 teachers submitted applications, reflecting the growing unemployment crisis in the education sector.
Of the advertised positions, 6,000 slots were designated for primary school teachers, attracting 93,646 applicants. For secondary school teachers, 450 positions were available, with 76,294 applications submitted. The majority of the applications (144,117) were for 39,550 junior secondary positions under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) initiative.
This overwhelming number of applications highlights the stark unemployment issue among Kenya’s teaching graduates. The limited vacancies offered by TSC have left a huge gap, with more than 314,000 teachers struggling to secure only 46,000 positions. Many teaching graduates continue to face joblessness amid Kenya’s rising cost of living, making the situation even more challenging.

The application period was open from October 1 to October 8. Despite the influx of applications, only a small percentage will secure jobs, leaving the majority still unemployed. The demand for teaching positions is far greater than the opportunities available, further exacerbating the issue of unemployment among qualified teachers.

To be considered for the advertised positions, candidates needed to meet several requirements. These included Kenyan citizenship, a minimum P1 certificate for primary school teachers, and a diploma in education for junior and secondary school teachers. Additionally, applicants had to be registered with the TSC, and serving interns were eligible to apply for the roles.
The TSC recruitment process has underscored the growing challenge of unemployment in Kenya’s teaching profession. While thousands of teachers aspire to secure positions, the limited availability of jobs leaves many still waiting for an opportunity. As the cost of living rises, the need for more employment opportunities in the education sector becomes even more urgent.
