TSC Latest Updates on Recruitment of 20,000 Grade 9 Teachers.
To alleviate the workload of educating Grade 9 students by 2025, the government plans to hire at least 20,000 new teachers. During a speech in Bungoma, Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu of the Ministry of Education announced that eighth-graders will advance to ninth grade within elementary schools.
Machogu emphasized that the administration has already allocated tasks to every constituency nationwide to facilitate this transition. Additionally, he highlighted that the government has secured a conditional Sh3.4 billion funding to construct 6,000 classrooms by the end of the year. This project results from close collaboration between the National Government-Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) and the national government.
Moreover, Machogu announced that the World Bank has provided Sh9 billion for constructing an additional 9,000 classrooms in elementary schools. This additional funding aims to complete 15,015 classrooms by the year’s end.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) plans to hire 20,000 teachers specifically for Grade 9. This initiative aims to address the teacher shortage and ensure adequate staffing for the new grade level. Machogu also mentioned that the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has completed the Grade 9 curriculum materials, and the process of making these resources available to the public is nearing completion.

Responding to social media rumors, Machogu denied claims that all Grade 9 classes would be moved to secondary schools in the next academic year. He also refuted allegations that he instructed the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) to design the Grade 8 Kenya Primary Placement Examination (KEPPE) to allocate pupils to Grade 9.
He assured that the current system remains unchanged and dismissed the rumors of a new exam being introduced by November. The CS also debunked false claims that the State intended to transfer Grade 9 teachers and students to secondary schools to implement the competency-based curriculum. A fabricated circular had falsely suggested that junior secondary school teachers would move from elementary schools to high schools to oversee grades 9, 10, 11, and 12.
The TSC has confirmed a severe teacher shortage in junior secondary schools, emphasizing the urgent need for the planned recruitment to ensure adequate staffing and the successful implementation of educational programs.
