TSC Confirms Permanent and Pensionable Employment for 2022 Intern Teachers.
Intern teachers hired in 2022 can now look forward to permanent, pensionable positions, as confirmed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). This significant announcement brings relief to many educators who were previously uncertain about their job security and future benefits.
In a memo dated January 11, 2023, TSC Director of Staffing Joseph Mugele emphasized the importance of retaining interns on the payroll during this transition. “The interviews for the exercise commence on Friday, January 13, and recruitment documents are scheduled for February 6,” the memo stated.
The TSC had previously committed to filling 25,550 intern positions and 10,000 permanent pensionable positions to tackle the nation’s teacher shortage. “TSC invites applications from qualified candidates to fill the vacancies to support the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC),” read part of their official statement.

Breaking down the numbers, TSC allocated 9,000 permanent posts for secondary school teachers and designated 1,000 for primary school instructors. Therefore, for intern positions, TSC set 21,550 for junior high school instructors and earmarked 4,000 for primary school interns.
This recruitment drive aligns with President William Ruto’s directive to hire 30,000 educators for the 2023–2024 school year. According to a statement from the president, “The Ministry of Education, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), and the TSC will work on modalities of fast-tracking retooling teachers to ensure the country has sufficient numbers who are compliant with CBC.”
This move by the TSC not only addresses immediate staffing needs but also ensures a stable future for thousands of teachers who play a crucial role in shaping Kenya’s educational landscape.
