Teachers Interdicted by TSC Over Transfers.
The Teachers Service Commission has interdicted teachers seeking transfers from North Eastern region citing insecurity issues.
The interdiction follows a circular by the Teachers Service Commission early in September requiring all teachers to report to work.
According to the interdicted teachers, the commission is overstepping its mandate. They indicate that they will camp outside the commission premises in Nairobi next week. At the same time they will file a petition seeking parliament’s intervention on the matter.
A majority of teachers including Geoffrey Kipng’eno, who hails from Kericho indicate that they cannot return to duty because of heightened levels of insecurity in the region.
To receive security, the teachers indicate that they pay police reservists Sh1500. They argue that one cannot travel on road since the distance is too big. The cost of air transport is also too high (Sh12,000) and a majority of them cannot afford.
In reference to letters sent to the interdicted teachers, TSC cites violation of the TSC act as the main reason for interdiction. It asserts that the teachers actions are contrary to clause (b) (iv) of the Third Schedule of the Act.
The effective date of interdiction for all the affected teachers is 22/09/2023.

A majority of teachers affected by the move by TSC questioned the move by the commission.
In addition, an anonymous source reveals that they received a call from the commission requiring them to compile a list of all the teachers who had not reported to work for transfer processing. The source indicates that they were shocked when the transfers changed to interdictions.
For a long time, many affected teachers have been visiting TSC offices in Nairobi seeking transfers due to insecurity in the North Eastern region.
In the interdiction letters, the commission outlines a 7 step appeal process that the teachers should follow before the commission determines their cases. The teachers should also provide sound evidence to support their case.
