Senate to Hear Impeachment Charges Against Deputy President Gachagua Today.
Today, the Senate will convene to address the impeachment charges leveled against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. This crucial session, scheduled for October 9, 2024, comes just hours after the National Assembly voted for his impeachment. The Senate now has the task of reviewing the allegations and determining whether to uphold the decision. If the impeachment is confirmed, Gachagua will face dismissal from office, marking a significant turning point in his political career.
Following the formal notice issued in line with Article 145 (3)(a) of the Constitution and Senate Standing Order 78(1), the Senate will deliberate on the charges today. They may decide to appoint a special committee to thoroughly investigate the allegations. During this process, Gachagua or his legal representative will have the opportunity to respond to the charges. The Senate requires at least two-thirds of its members to vote in favor of the impeachment for it to be upheld. Should this threshold be met, Gachagua will officially be removed from his position as Deputy President.

The impeachment motion, spearheaded by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, outlined 11 serious accusations against the Deputy President. These include gross violations of the Constitution, undermining both the President and the Cabinet, and compromising judicial independence by attacking a judge. Additionally, Gachagua faces allegations of undermining devolution, making inflammatory statements, and committing economic crimes. Further accusations accuse him of spreading false and divisive remarks, insubordinating the President, and persistently bullying public officers. These charges collectively paint a picture of severe misconduct and call into question his ability to serve in office.
As the Senate begins its proceedings today, the outcome of the impeachment trial will have far-reaching implications for Kenya’s political landscape. Should the Senate vote to uphold the charges, Deputy President Gachagua will be removed from office, marking a significant development in his tenure. For now, all eyes remain on the Senate as they deliberate on the fate of the Deputy President.
