Salary of educators after pay raise.
Following the latest pay rise, many teachers have raised concerns about the disparity between teachers in higher cadres and those in lower cadres.
According to teacher union leaders, teachers in lower cadres, especially those in grade B5, commonly called P1 teachers, could receive a higher raise than those in higher grades, such as those in grade D5.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers secretary general, Collins Oyuu, argues that the union has taken measures in analyzing the new teachers salary scale ranges before making its next move. The union still holds that teachers in lower cadres should benefit the most from the recent pay rise.
In reiterating the stand of the Kenya National Union of Teachers, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) secretary general, Akello Misori, committed to issue a comprehensive statement in due course.
Regarding the proposed salary increment, teachers in the lowest cadre, B5, will receive a salary increase between the ranges of Ksh 21756 to 23279 and Ksh 27195 to 29915 after the implementation of the government proposal.
The proposed rate between 7% and 10% translates to approximately an increment of Ksh 1523 and Ksh 2720, respectively.
On the other hand, teachers in higher cadres, such as D5, with a salary of Ksh 131380, will receive a salary increase of an average of Ksh 9197 within the 7% category. At an increment rate of 10%, for teachers in D5 with a salary of Ksh 157657, the salary increment will be an average of Ksh. 16762.
With a focus on the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) framework, higher cadres received the most considerable benefits, while teachers in the lowest cadres received the lowest benefits.

Teachers in low cadres, B5, primarily comprise P1 teachers and are the ones who receive the lowest salaries. Teachers in this grade receive automatic promotion to the next grade after three years.
According to the salaries and remuneration chairman, the salary review aims to realize remuneration equity and fairness while considering affordability and fiscal sustainability. The proposed remuneration structure will be considered within the 2023-2024 budgetary allocation of 27.7 billion.
