Rising Preference for Diploma Courses Over Degrees Among Kenyan Students in Latest Placement.
In a significant shift, 47,872 students who achieved a C+ grade in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) opted for diploma courses over university degrees. Data from the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) reveals that both public and private universities are facing low enrollment rates for their various degree programs.
Despite universities having a total capacity to admit 278,006 students for degree programs, only 153,274 students were placed out of the 201,146 who qualified, representing just 55 percent. This under-enrollment highlights a growing trend among students preferring alternative educational paths.
The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has seen a surge in applications, with 56,516 candidates applying for spots in its medical courses. The campuses, which can accommodate 17,172 students, have exceeded their capacity by placing 19,653 candidates, resulting in an over-enrollment of 2,481.

Additionally, KUCCPS data shows that 199,980 students have been placed in diploma courses. Those with mean grades of D+ and D- (280,174 students) have received allocation to certificate programs, while 213,932 students with grades of D- and E receiving placement in artisan courses.
In total, KUCCPS processed the placement of 899,232 candidates, reflecting the varied educational preferences and the increasing inclination towards diploma and certificate courses among Kenyan students. Therefore, this trend suggests a shifting landscape in higher education, with many students seeking more practical and vocational training opportunities over traditional degree programs.
This move could be a resultant factor of the growing recognition of the value of technical skills in the job market, prompting a reassessment of the conventional paths to career success in Kenya.
