Mass Sacking of Junior School Teachers Following Strike Termination.
Thousands of contract Junior School teachers have been abruptly dismissed, just two days after ending their strike. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) cited professional misconduct as the reason for these terminations in letters issued to the affected educators on Monday.
Although the exact number of dismissed teachers remains unclear, last month, the TSC had issued ‘show cause’ letters to 7,357 teachers involved in the contentious internship program. The TSC dated the termination letters June 6, 2024, and handed them out to head teachers on Monday, June 10.
One termination letter stated: “Reference is made to the show cause letter in which you were accorded an opportunity to explain the reasons why your engagement as an intern should not be terminated on account of professional misconduct. The commission has carefully considered your response and found the same to be unsatisfactory.”

Another letter highlighted: “The commission has noted that you failed and/or ignored to provide any reason for your absence from duty as required vide the afore-mentioned letter. In view of the above, the commission has decided to terminate your internship with effect from June 6, 2024.”
Among those dismissed is Omari Omari, the spokesperson for the teachers’ lobby advocating for permanent employment for these teachers. Omari shared his experience: “I was given my letter today after reporting to Karen C Primary in Lang’ata sub-County. We sought an audience with the regional director but were told that the termination is final as we are considered interns.”
This mass dismissal follows a recent strike by the teachers demanding better employment terms, highlighting the ongoing struggles within the education sector. The TSC’s decision has stirred controversy, with many calling for a reevaluation of the commission’s handling of teacher contracts and professional conduct.
