KNUT Meets TSC to Discuss Potential Teachers Strike Ahead of Third Term.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), led by Secretary General Collins Oyuu, has scheduled a crucial meeting with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for Wednesday, August 7. This meeting aims to address unresolved issues related to the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and possibly prevent the planned teachers’ strike.
Oyuu explained that they had initiated the first step by writing to the employer, demanding a meeting. Following this meeting, if necessary, KNUT plans to proceed with issuing a strike notice. The timing of this potential strike aligns with the third term of the academic year, which Oyuu defended as the most strategic time for action.
KNUT decided to push for this meeting after paying the first phase of the CBA in July 2023, while the second phase, due in July 2024, remains unpaid. Oyuu emphasized that if the upcoming meeting with the TSC does not resolve the issues, KNUT will move forward with issuing a strike notice.

“The first steps to write to the employer and demand for a meeting have been taken. We should be sitting tomorrow, the 7th of August 2024. Then, we shall proceed ahead and give a strike notice,” stated Oyuu.
Despite the potential disruptions during the third term, Oyuu argued that this timing was necessary given the current circumstances. He acknowledged the legal challenges but stressed that the union felt compelled to act due to ongoing issues.

The unresolved issues include the unpaid second phase of the CBA and concerns over loan deductions. Teachers are aware of their loan repayments, but banks report non-receipt of funds, indicating that deducted amounts have not reached the banks. This discrepancy adds to the urgency of the meeting and the potential strike.
KNUT remains firm in demanding the fulfillment of the CBA and resolution of the deduction issues. The proposed strike aims to address these ongoing concerns, which significantly impact teachers’ financial stability and overall morale.
Oyuu defended the union’s stance on the strike, stating that the third term, despite its potential impact, was the best time to take action. He argued that the union’s decision was not taken lightly and was driven by the need to address the pressing issues affecting teachers.
In conclusion, the scheduled meeting with TSC on August 7 is critical in determining the next steps for KNUT and its members. The union hopes for a resolution that will prevent the strike and ensure the fulfillment of the CBA and proper handling of loan deductions.
