KNUT Advocates for P1 Teachers in Upcoming TSC Recruitment.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is urging the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to prioritize P1 teachers in the upcoming recruitment drive. The union is concerned that the current emphasis on Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers is sidelining P1 teachers, who play a crucial role in primary education.
Desmond Lang’at, the Executive Secretary of KNUT’s Bomet branch, highlighted the issue during a recent press briefing. He noted the alarming trend of neglecting P1 teachers, emphasizing that these educators are highly qualified and possess age-appropriate teaching skills essential for primary learners.
Lang’at stressed the importance of not overlooking P1 teachers in the recruitment process. In addition, he argued that these teachers are vital for maintaining the quality of education in the primary sector. “TSC is now focusing on hiring JSS teachers, forgetting P1 tutors. These teachers are well-qualified to handle the primary section and should be given priority,” Lang’at stated.

Additionally, Lang’at proposed retooling JSS teachers to ensure they align with the comprehensive school system. He pointed out that many JSS teachers trained initially for secondary education, making this retooling process necessary for a seamless transition to teaching younger students.

Lang’at also took the opportunity to commend the discipline and dedication of teachers in the Bomet region. He praised their hard work and noted the recent absence of indiscipline cases in the county, attributing this to the teachers’ commitment. He believes this dedication reflects positively on both the union and the broader education sector in Bomet.
In conclusion, KNUT is calling for a balanced approach in the upcoming TSC recruitment to ensure that both P1 and JSS teachers are adequately represented. This approach will help maintain high education standards across all levels.
