Interviews For the Promotion Of 36,505 Teachers to Commence on December 4.
Teacher Service Commission (TSC) CEO Nancy Macharia has revealed that interviews to promote 36,505 teachers will kick off on December 4. Macharia urged teachers to apply for promotions, especially those who have remained in one job group for a decade. While addressing the Kenya Primary School Head Teachers Association (KEPSHA) annual conference in Mombasa, she emphasized the importance of not shying away from additional responsibilities.
Macharia expressed concerns on the historically low turnout for past promotion exercises despite relaxed requirements. Encouraging teachers to seize this opportunity, she announced a budget of Sh1 billion for the promotion exercise. She expressed concern over the staggering number of vacancies in various regions, urging unemployed teachers to apply nationwide and not limit themselves to their home counties.
The CEO disclosed that 17,914 out of the 36,505 teachers earmarked for promotion are from primary schools, and some have been stagnating in one job group for a decade. Moreover, Macharia highlighted the unfilled teaching positions in Coast, Rift Valley, North Eastern, Eastern, and Central regions, urging unemployed teachers to broaden their job search horizons.

In specific regions, such as Rift Valley and North Eastern, many advertised vacancies remain unoccupied, with Macharia citing insecurity as a deterrent for teachers. However, she noted that all slots for Nyanza and Nairobi are already full.
While expressing gratitude to the government for allocating funds to recruit 56,000 teachers in one year, Macharia outlined TSC’s commitment to retooling teachers for ongoing education sector reforms. She highlighted the successful training of over 229,000 primary school teachers and 56,928 teachers, including newly recruited Junior School teachers and those deployed from primary to Junior Secondary schools.
Macharia underscored TSC’s IT compliance, making the recruitment process efficient and eliminating the need for teachers to submit applications physically. She emphasized automating teachers’ pay slip processing and streamlining various administrative functions for increased accountability and efficiency.
In her closing remarks, Macharia expressed confidence in the capabilities of head teachers to lead comprehensive schools, combining primary and Junior Secondary levels, as they successfully navigated the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) to Grade 8.
