Addressing Recent Teacher Intern Protests: TSC’s Directive.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has responded to recent protests among teacher interns, urging them to adhere to a court order and resume duties at their respective schools. Activities in public schools officially resumed on May 13, 2024, with the TSC emphasizing the importance of compliance.
In a statement by Dr. Jamleck Muturi John, Chairman of the Teachers Service Commission, the institution reiterated its commitment to addressing issues within the teaching service while considering all stakeholders’ interests. The Teacher Internship Programme, a national government initiative, aims to provide practical experience to aspiring educators.
Despite a legal challenge by the Forum for Good Governance and Human Rights, the Court’s ruling permits the program to continue until August 1, 2024. The TSC acknowledges the ongoing legal process but emphasizes the temporary continuation of the internship.

Separately, a strike among junior secondary school (JSS) teachers has disrupted learning nationwide for the second term. Led by the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), these educators demand permanent and pensionable employment, citing their qualifications and official licenses.
The teachers question why they remain unengaged despite possessing Teaching Service Commission numbers and the requisite certifications. Court documents reveal that the commission lacks the financial means to transition the 46,000 interns to permanent roles due to a lack of appropriations by the national assembly.
This development underscores the complex landscape of education and employment in Kenya, with ongoing legal, financial, and stakeholder challenges requiring careful navigation by authorities and educators alike.
