What is the Value of Teachers in Kenya?
Herman Manyora has raised serious concerns on the value of teachers in Kenya by taking into consideration the level of attention paid to their level of remuneration.
According to Manyora, teachers in Kenya do not receive the respect they deserve. According to him, their rewards await for them in heaven. Teachers play an instrumental role in directing the course society takes. In today’s economy, where parents spend almost an entire day trying to fend for their families, teachers take up the role of an educator and a parent.
Manyora’s argument indicates that the value of teachers in the country is beyond material considerations.
Further, Manyora draws attention to the country’s compensation system. In his perspective, he holds that in Kenya, Members of the County Assembly receive higher remuneration than university professors. An argument that has raised an in-depth discussion on the country’s priorities and the framework for resource allocation.
On this basis, questions have risen on whether or not teachers in the country receive the compensation that equates to their role in society. The answer is no. Presently, in comparison to other civil servants in the country with similar qualifications and grades, teachers receive very little pay.

Even though Kenya is grabbling with implementation of educational reforms, the remarks by professor Manyora serve as a reminder on the intrinsic value of teachers and the role that they play in society today.
In addition, the remarks reiterate the need to reevaluate Kenya’s compensation framework to the benefits of teachers in the country.
From time to time, it is essential to remember that it is impossible to fully celebrate the pivotal role teachers play in this country here on earth. They serve a purpose whose reward is in heaven.
