UASU Urges Swift Resolution to University of Nairobi Leadership Row.
The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) is demanding an urgent resolution to the ongoing leadership conflicts at the University of Nairobi. The union has stressed the immediate need for the commencement of Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) negotiations and the resumption of internal promotions to restore stability and integrity within the university.
In a press release on Tuesday, May 28, UASU Chapter Secretary Maloba Wekesa voiced the union’s concerns about the adverse effects of the leadership disputes on the university’s reputation and functioning. Furthermore, Wekesa emphasized the importance of prioritizing the welfare of university staff and adhering to the rule of law and the institution’s traditions.
“The welfare of our members must be at the forefront of the university’s decision-making processes amid these disputes,” stated Wekesa. “This includes initiating and concluding the long-overdue internal CBA for 2017/21 and resuming internal promotion interviews. We uphold the respect for the rule of law, the sanctity of our long-standing traditions, and the recognition that our efforts extend beyond Kenya for the future of our beloved country. The university deserves to operate peacefully as a leading research and teaching institution.”

These remarks come in the midst of a power struggle between the University Council and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama. The Council has been pushing for Prof. Kiama’s removal, having previously directed him to take leave and appointing Professor Ayub Njoroge Gitau as Acting Vice Chancellor with full authority. The Council also annulled all staff transfers and movements made in response to a court case, ordering affected staff to return to their former positions immediately.
Prof. Kiama, however, has contested the legitimacy of the Council’s directives, arguing that they were not formally ratified and represent individual opinions rather than collective decisions of the Council. According to UASU, the ongoing conflict between the two parties is not only disrupting academic activities but also tarnishing the reputation of one of the region’s most prestigious institutions.
UASU is calling for immediate action to address the leadership crisis and to ensure the university’s operational integrity. In addition. the union believes that resolving these issues is crucial for maintaining the university’s standing and ensuring a stable environment for academic and research excellence.
