UASU Issues Strike Notice Over University of Nairobi Leadership Dispute.
The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) at the University of Nairobi (UoN) has issued a seven-day strike notice due to ongoing leadership disputes. Chapter Secretary Maloba Wekesa announced this on Tuesday, August 6, blaming the University Council for destabilizing the institution by suspending Vice Chancellor Stephen Kiama.
Wekesa highlighted that UoN has had three different University Councils in the past three years, while the staff remains constant. He emphasized that the frequent changes negatively impact the staff, who are the backbone of the university.
Addressing Council Chair Amukowa Anangwe, Wekesa refuted claims that staff complaints led to Kiama’s suspension. He asserted that the university had not consulted the union and that they had no records of such complaints. Wekesa emphasized that UASU represents the academic staff and should participate in such decisions.

The union also criticized the leadership wrangles within the Council for delaying July salaries, calling it a “slap in the face” to hardworking staff. Wekesa acknowledged the Council’s authority to decide who leads as CEO but stressed that they must exercise such powers with respect and humility.
UASU warned that they would take action if salaries were not paid immediately and consistently. Wekesa stated that salary delays indicate an unstable future, which the union cannot tolerate. In addition, he demanded that salaries be paid on time every month.
