Teacher Shortage: An NGO’s Solution.
A Non Governmental Organization (NGO) has made a move that provides a platform for students and scholars in institutions of higher learning to provide teaching services in schools with dire staffing needs.
The NGO (Teach for Kenya), utilizes students pursuing various courses in university and provides them with the necessary training before deployment to schools in the Nairobi and Kisumu regions.
Potential University students take part in a six week long training before they receive assignments to institutions of learning at the primary school level, especially in underprivileged sections within the Kisumu and Nairobi counties.
According to the NGO’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Yukabeth Kidenda, it is the desire of every student to become a professional in society. Therefore, on top of this desire, the organization engages students in a bid to help them realize their full potential.
Further, she adds that 23 schools have received benefits from the program. In Kisumu, Kosawo Primary school is among the greatest beneficiaries of the program. Marura primary school, St. HydeMarie primary, Kwa Njenga, and Beta Life have also received benefits from the program in the Nairobi region.
Kidenda indicates that the organization seeks to recruit graduates from various academic programs from different universities in Kenya.
The focus of the program is on nurturing the leadership skills of young professionals. By so doing, it creates a long-term supply of graduates with high levels of competency.

In creating awareness on the organization’s roles, the organization has put in place a summit that will bring together 62 partners.
The key focus of the summit will be on providing participants with a platform for exchanging ideas and discussing challenges they encounter in this and other similar programs.
Additionally, it will also provide individuals with an opportunity to network and create linkages with organizations with similar objectives.
According to Kidenda, such an arrangement is critical since it provides an opportunity for organizations to advocate for local solutions.
