Professor Kiama still steers the University of Nairobi.
Barely a month after taking a six months leave, professor Kiama has reported back to his University of Nairobi office.
Information from his social media handles indicates sufficiency of rest and fitness to resume work. The move comes as a surprise to many since his leave began on August 1, 2023. The focus of the leave was on in a bid to utilize his accrued leave days before his contract at the institution comes to an end.
Before taking his leave, the professor articulated his intentions for taking the annual leave for a period of not less than six months. There is also an indication of a possibility of an extension. According to the Salaries and Remuneration commission, it is now not possible to convert leave days to cash benefits. An advisory applicable to all public servants. On this basis, professor Kiama makes a decision to clear his accumulated leave days. In his statement, he also indicates that he has no intentions of presenting his name in a bid to serve for another additional term.
According to professor Kiama, since his appointment as the University Vice Chancellor in January 2020, he had not taken any leave due to the demanding nature of the office. At the time of his leave, it could have been impossible for the professor to exhaust his leave days if his request was not granted.
During his leave, the institution’s deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Julius Ogeng’o took over in acting capacity.
Sources however reveal that professor Kiama might have differences with the chairman of the council, Professor Amukowa Anangwe, whose appointment to the institution council has lasted for barely a year. According to Professor Kiama the success of the institution depends on staying true to its mission and vision.
