Pastoral Communities in Laikipia Urged to Embrace Education.
Pastoral communities in Laikipia County have been encouraged to prioritize education as a means to uplift their livelihoods. Laikipia Senator John Kinyua emphasized the importance of education, particularly for those in pastoral regions who have suffered from the devastating effects of climate change. With livestock losses causing significant financial strain, education offers a sustainable way forward for these communities.
During an event at the Naibunga Conservancy, where over 130 students received bursaries totaling more than Sh3 million from the Northern Rangeland Trust (NRT), Senator Kinyua urged parents to recognize the value of education. He stressed that even though livestock have been severely affected by drought, education remains a crucial asset for their children’s future. Kinyua affirmed his commitment to working with any organization or individual dedicated to supporting education for children in these regions.
Peter Kilesi, the Naibunga Conservancy Chairman, echoed these sentiments. He explained that the bursary initiative aims to promote education and address challenges like early marriages among girls. Many families in pastoral areas struggle financially, which leads to a high rate of school dropouts. Consequently, girls often face early marriages, and boys become involved in harmful practices like cattle rustling. The bursary program seeks to break this cycle by offering financial support for education.

Kilesi highlighted that part of the community’s efforts to promote education comes from funds generated by carbon credit programs. These funds stem from the community’s conservation initiatives, which include rational grazing and pasture reseeding. As a result, by managing their natural resources more sustainably, the community has found a way to invest in their children’s education and future.

Local resident Josephine Mamai also pointed out that conservation efforts have significantly improved the livelihoods of many pastoral families. The funds derived from rangeland conservation management have enabled parents to focus more on their children’s education, creating a brighter future for the region.
