Over 71,000 Teachers Promoted in Five Years.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) significantly impacted Kenya’s education sector by promoting 71,000 teachers over the past five years. TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia highlighted this substantial achievement during the 47th Annual Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) meeting in Mombasa.
In the current financial year alone, TSC has promoted 36,504 teachers, bringing the total number of promotions to 71,212 in the last five years. This includes 545 deputy principals who have been elevated to headship roles across various schools nationwide. Consequently, Dr. Macharia emphasized the importance of these promotions for enhancing school leadership and ensuring quality education.
Dr. Macharia shared the commission’s plans to continue this progress in the upcoming financial year. The government has allocated Sh1 billion to address the backlog of promotions in the financial year 2024/2025. This funding will help TSC promote more teachers, further strengthening the education system.

In the past five years, TSC established 3,445 new schools, adding 160 this year alone. These new schools need skilled leadership, and TSC remains committed to promoting qualified teachers to principal positions to meet this demand. In addition, Dr. Macharia urged school principals to encourage eligible teachers to apply for upcoming vacancies.
In March this year, TSC moved 36,000 teachers into new job groups out of the 65,000 anticipated. Dr. Macharia also outlined plans to convert intern teachers to permanent and pensionable status once government funds become available. Additionally, an appeal process has been initiated for 742 Junior Secondary School intern teachers recently dismissed for absconding duty, with each case being reviewed on merit.

Dr. Macharia emphasized the need for principals to motivate eligible teachers to apply for vacancies. “As principals, I urge you to encourage eligible teachers in your schools to apply for vacancies once advertised,” she said. This proactive approach aims to fill leadership positions with capable and motivated educators.
In conclusion, TSC’s promotion of 71,000 teachers over the past five years marks a significant milestone for Kenya’s education sector. With continued support from the government and a clear plan for future promotions, TSC will further improve the quality of education and school leadership across the country. By encouraging eligible teachers to step into leadership roles, the commission ensures that every school has skilled leadership necessary for student success.
