Over 150000 KCSE Candidates Secured University Placement Under New Funding Model.
The Ministry of Education has announced the placement of 153,274 candidates from the 2023 KCSE into universities through the Student-Centred Funding Model. Education CS Ezekiel Machogu stated that these students will have their fees covered through a combination of self-sponsorship, scholarships, and loans.
On Friday, June 7, Machogu elaborated on the new funding approach, which has been separating the student placement process from funding since its introduction in September 2023. This model has successfully attracted a significant number of funding applications.
“As of May 2024, we have seen 112,741 university students and 151,933 TVET learners apply for scholarships and loans from the Universities Fund and HELB respectively. We have disbursed a total of Sh24.76 billion in scholarships and loans for university students, while TVET trainees have received Sh11.3 billion,” Machogu reported.

Out of 201,146 candidates who qualified for university entry in the 2023 KCSE, KUCCPS has placed 153,274 students into various degree programs. Therefore, as these students prepare to enter higher learning institutions, the government argues that it will cover their degree program fees through a mix of scholarships, loans, and parental contributions.
“Parents or guardians will know their contribution amount only after the student has applied for funding and undergone a need-based assessment. This process will determine the scholarship and loan amounts required,” Machogu explained.
The Cabinet Secretary has instructed HELB and the Universities Fund to open the funding portal by June 15, allowing eligible students to apply. In addition, the results of the funding applications are expected to be released starting July 31, 2024.
Machogu also called on universities and funding agencies to initiate a sensitization program to educate students and parents about the new funding model and its advantages.
