New University Funding Model Gains Support from MMU Council Boss.
Albert Kochei, the Chairperson of Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU), has praised the New Universities Funding model. He believes it will bring equity and resolve the current issues within higher education. While some criticism has emerged, Kochei argues that much of it stems from misinformation and data errors submitted by students.
Kochei highlighted that the funding model uses various parameters to determine students’ financial needs. However, he noted that many complaints result from incorrect data provided by students. He encouraged those who feel misclassified in the banding system to appeal for a review. According to Kochei, the real issue lies not in the model itself but in the misinformation surrounding it. He urged professionals and political leaders to help raise awareness and educate the public on the benefits of the new system.
Supporting the proposal to combine all bursaries into a single fund, Kochei emphasized that this approach would improve the management of the bursary system. By eliminating duplication and waste, this consolidated fund could better serve students and enhance transparency. Kochei believes this change will streamline financial assistance, ensuring that students in need receive proper support.

While endorsing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), Kochei pointed out that its success depends on increased investment in education infrastructure and staffing. He called for more funds to hire additional teachers and build new classrooms, ensuring that the CBC can meet its full potential. Addressing these gaps, according to Kochei, is essential to improving the quality of education in Kenya.
