New KICD Boss Promises to Inspire Growth
The new Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development chairman, Simon Gicharu, has expressed his commitment to capitalize on his network to drive growth at the institute.
After taking over the leadership mantle at KICD, Gicheru promised to promote unity and teamwork in the institution.
According to Gicharu, no child should be left behind in matters relating to receiving facilitation through curriculum support materials.
He made this statement while speaking after taking the leadership mantle at KICD after the president appointed him chairperson.
The appointment of Gicharu comes after the revocation of Elishiba Njambi Kimani’s appointment as the chairperson.
During the handing-over ceremony, Kimani urged Gicharu to stir the institute to greater heights and ensure that it realizes its goals and agenda.
According to Kimani, Gicharu now has the responsibility of spearheading the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

The KICD director, Prof Charles Ong’ondo, promised to support Gicharu in achieving the institute’s objectives.
In addition, he expressed his excitement about receiving Gicharu as the new chairperson and indicated that he is optimistic that there will be high levels of innovation in the organization under his leadership.
Consequently, Gicharu promised to do everything he could as the chairperson to ensure service delivery within the institute improves.
KICD is Kenya’s primary institution in curriculum development and the production and distribution of support materials in line with internationally accepted standards for all levels of education training in Kenya.
Gicharu further reiterated his sentiments by arguing that his primary mandate will be improving efficiency and collective responsibility to facilitate the realization of the Kenyan education system’s objectives.
In addition, he assured other council members of his commitment to fostering harmony to ensure the effective administration of the institution.
Notably, he reiterated the institute’s commitment to enhancing all teachers’ competency levels to facilitate quality curriculum delivery. Gicharu promises to create linkages between various education stakeholders to facilitate a smooth transition to higher learning institutions.
Gicharu takes over KICD’s leadership mantle at a time when CBC is in its implementation stages, with the pioneer cohort of JSS proceeding to their second year.
His appointment as the KICD chairperson was through a Gazette Notice dated October 13th, 2023, and spans three years.

Gicharu is a respectable stakeholder in education and the founder of Mount Kenya University. He has served in various leadership positions, including the chairman of the Rural Electrification Authority and the Renewable Energy Corporation.
He has received praise for his contributions to education advancement in Kenya and East Africa.
