Mount Kenya University Launches Global Partnership Programs with Germany and Austria.
Mount Kenya University (MKU) has introduced an exciting international collaboration with institutions in Germany and Austria, aiming to provide its students with global exposure and valuable healthcare experience. This initiative, announced on Monday, marks a significant step in broadening the horizons of MKU’s nursing students.
The program offers nursing students at MKU an apprenticeship opportunity at the University of Koblenz in Germany. Moreover, supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), this exchange allows students to practice in German hospitals. Here, they gain firsthand experience in diverse international healthcare systems.
Additionally, the program includes an apprenticeship in Austria. This collaboration with Lebenshilfe Tirol, an organization that supports individuals with disabilities, offers students a unique perspective on healthcare and social services.

A crucial aspect of this program is the requirement for proficiency in the German language. Effective communication and cultural integration play essential roles in this international exchange. As a result, to prepare students, MKU has appointed Ms. Charlotte Katharin Filbry as the language trainer. She will equip students with the necessary skills to navigate their new environment and immerse themselves fully in their learning experience.
Prof. Simon Gicharu, the founder of MKU, emphasized the importance of language skills with a personal anecdote. During a tour in Germany, he faced a language barrier that resulted in the loss of his camera. He noted, “This experience taught me the crucial role of linguistic and cultural understanding,” underscoring the practical applications of the program’s language training.

Beyond this international partnership, MKU is driving several other ambitious projects. These include establishing the Malindi Maritime Academy, creating a center for e-sports training, and launching an innovation and incubation center funded by a World Bank grant. Therefore, these initiatives aim to expand opportunities for MKU students across various fields.
During MKU’s recent 25th graduation ceremony, Prof. Gicharu announced a significant gesture. The university will release certificates unconditionally to graduates who were unable to collect them due to financial constraints. “This gesture supports our graduates in securing employment,” he stated, reaffirming MKU’s commitment to its students’ success and the broader community.
Mount Kenya University continues to lead in educational innovation, striving to produce graduates with a global perspective. Therefore, with a vision to empower future leaders, MKU remains dedicated to providing transformational education that fosters positive change worldwide.
