Ministry of Education to Harmonize Education System for Skills Enhancement.
The Ministry of Education is set to harmonize the education system, with a focus on enhancing skills development across the nation. Esther Mworia, the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET), emphasized that a harmonized system will optimize both existing and emerging skills, thereby boosting the economy and aiding the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
Dr. Mworia highlighted the pivotal role of the Kenya National Qualification Authority (KNQA) in this harmonization process. In addition, she underscored the Ministry’s commitment to relevance, professionalism, and adequate representation to elevate education standards in Kenya. “It’s crucial to implement instruments that assess setbacks and strengths, identify gaps, set long-term strategic goals, and ensure optimal resource utilization,” she stated.
While speaking at a workshop at Lake Naivasha Resort, where participants finalized the KNQA Strategic Plan, Dr. Mworia acknowledged the significant contribution of KNQA in harmonizing the national education system. The authority is working to address skill-related issues vital for economic sustainability. In addition, she praised KNQA for the development and national implementation of the Recognition of Prior Learning policy, which complements existing accreditation pathways and promotes lifelong learning. “These initiatives collectively support the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda by investing in the economy,” she added.

KNQA Director General Alice Kande assured that the Strategic Plan would ensure quality service delivery, with a strong commitment to professionalism and integrity. Consequently, Dr. Kande noted that the authority is crucial in harmonizing education and training through the implementation of the Kenya National Qualifications Framework. “As we finalize the new Strategic Plan, we embrace the significant responsibility of shaping the nation’s future by managing and implementing the framework,” she remarked.
Stanley Kiptis, the KNQA Chairperson, urged staff to deliver a comprehensive national database of credible qualifications, seamlessly integrated with other educational sub-frameworks. Therefore, he highlighted the importance of aligning KNQA plans with the African Continental Qualifications Framework to enhance skill and qualification development. “The African Continental Qualifications Framework is key to fostering continental integration, prosperity, and achieving our set objectives,” Kiptis noted.
In summary, the Ministry of Education’s initiative to harmonize the education system aims to maximize skill development, support economic growth, and implement strategic goals that ensure the optimal use of resources. The KNQA’s efforts in policy development, quality assurance, and integration with continental frameworks are pivotal to achieving these objectives.
