Ministry of Education to Extend the Academic Calendar.
In a recent development, the Kenyan Ministry of Education has made a significant announcement that will impact the academic calendar and the scheduling of examinations for students across the nation. This decision comes in the wake of unexpected disruptions caused by severe weather conditions, specifically the heavy rains and flooding that have affected the country.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has stated that the government plans to extend Term Two of the school year. This extension aims to compensate for the instructional time lost due to a two-week delay in the opening of schools, which was a direct consequence of the flooding crisis. The extension of the term particularly focuses on ensuring that candidates preparing for national examinations have sufficient time to cover the syllabus.
Despite the changes to the term dates, the Ministry has confirmed that the examination schedule will remain unchanged. The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) will however proceed according to scedule in November. This decision underscores the Ministry’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the examination process while also acknowledging the need for flexibility in the face of unforeseen challenges.

The Ministry’s response to the flooding includes not only adjusting the academic calendar but also considering alternative learning arrangements for schools in the most affected counties, such as Tana River, Homa Bay, and Kisumu. These measures may involve relocating students to safer locations to ensure that their education continues uninterrupted.
President William Ruto has also been proactive in addressing the impact of the floods on the education sector, declaring a fund to aid in the rebuilding of affected schools. This fund is a part of a broader strategy to realize the safety and educational needs of all students during this challenging time.
The Ministry’s decision reflects a delicate balance between ensuring that students are adequately prepared for their examinations and adapting to the realities imposed by natural disasters. It is a reminder of the resilience of the education system and the importance of strategic planning in ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of the circumstances.
