KUPPET Stands with Intern Teachers: Urges Negotiations Amid Strike.
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has joined forces with intern teachers in their ongoing strike, urging the government to allocate funds for hiring tutors. This strike, impacting the education of over 2.5 million Grade 8 and 9 students in junior secondary schools (JSS), is occurring amidst widespread school closures due to extensive flooding nationwide.
In a statement released by KUPPET’s secretary general Akello Misori, the disruption in learning for JSS classes due to teacher protests has persisted for multiple days. Misori’s letters to Parliament, the National Treasury, and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) highlight the need for urgent intervention to resume teaching and learning activities.
KUPPET is advocating for negotiations within legal frameworks to address the grievances of approximately 46,000 intern teachers, a significant portion of whom are employed in JSS. They have also requested a meeting with the TSC to find a mutually beneficial resolution to the impasse.

The union has directly appealed to the National Treasury, urging immediate allocation of resources to the TSC for the permanent and pensionable employment of teachers. This request, outlined in a letter dated May 14 to the Principal Secretary of the National Treasury, underscores the urgency of addressing the intern teachers’ employment status.
Owino Okello, the chairman of intern teachers in Nairobi, emphasized their commitment to the strike despite potential threats, citing a recent court ruling that invalidated the internship status for trained, registered, and licensed teachers. Okello stated, “In light of the ruling by the Labour Relations Court in Nairobi, and the subsequent nullification of internship for trained, registered and licensed teachers, we will obey the ruling of the court by staying away from schools for internships.”
KUPPET’s stance reflects the pressing need for swift governmental action to resolve the intern teachers’ concerns and ensure uninterrupted education for millions of students across Kenya.
