KUPPET Secretary General Misori Defends Decision Amid Resignation Calls.
Akelo Misori, the Secretary General of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), is under increasing pressure from union members, as calls for his resignation grow louder. The unrest stems from his decision to call off a nationwide teachers’ strike, a move that has angered several branch Executive Secretaries. However, Misori has firmly defended his actions, stating that the decision was made collectively by the union’s National Executive Board (NEB).
Addressing the media recently, Misori made it clear that the decision to end the strike was not his alone but rather a consensus reached by the NEB. He stressed that the executive board acted on behalf of the entire union, not at his personal discretion. Misori emphasized, “The mandate we executed was not mine alone; I speak on behalf of the executive board.” His response aimed to dispel claims that he had overstepped his authority.
Misori also criticized the branch Executive Secretaries for their inconsistent stance. According to him, these same officials had initially supported the NEB’s negotiations with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), only to later criticize the outcome. He expressed frustration over their change of tone, calling it an example of double standards. “Leadership means making decisions, even unpopular ones. It’s better to act than to do nothing,” Misori added, reaffirming his commitment to his role as the union’s decision-maker.

Despite the controversy, Misori maintains that the strike yielded meaningful progress. He outlined several significant achievements, including the implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), the reinstatement of the teachers’ medical cover, and securing commitments on the employment of Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers. In addition, Misori also addressed teacher promotions and reassured union members that they would resolve ongoing issues until meeting all demands. “We will pursue every unresolved issue until we fulfill every single demand,” he said confidently.

His defense comes in response to accusations that the NEB overstepped its authority by calling off the strike without consulting the union’s broader National Governing Council (NGC). Critics argue that, according to Article 22(b) of the union’s constitution, only the NGC has the power to initiate and end strikes. They pointed out that during a recent meeting, the NGC had approved the continuation of the strike, leading many to believe that the strike would persist.

Adding fuel to the fire, Misori had proposed a virtual meeting to discuss the status of the strike and review the union’s next steps. However, this meeting never took place, leaving some branch officials even more dissatisfied. Misori’s critics argue that his failure to follow through with this meeting shows a lack of transparency and further undermines the trust between union leadership and its members.
As tensions rise within KUPPET, Akelo Misori firmly defends the NEB’s decisions. While some union officials call for his resignation, Misori remains committed to fulfilling the union’s objectives. He assures teachers that the union continues to address their demands and pushes for progress, even though it isn’t fully achieved yet. Whether this will ease the dissatisfaction among members remains uncertain, but Misori stands his ground for now.
