KUPPET Pushes for Pay Increase for Exam Supervisors and Invigilators.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has intensified its demand for better pay for exam supervisors and invigilators. KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori emphasized that the current compensation, provided by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), fails to match the significant effort teachers put into overseeing national exams. Misori noted that teachers are frustrated, especially as non-teaching staff receive higher pay while teachers receive as little as Ksh150 for exam supervision tasks.
Speaking at the Meru branch Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Ntakira Day Secondary School in North Imenti, Misori described the dissatisfaction among teachers, especially with the impending KPSEA exams. Principals, who manage early morning, mid-morning, and evening trips to exam centers, receive a meager Ksh50, which has sparked further frustration. Misori asserted, “Principals are being paid as low as Ksh50, despite their early and repeated trips to exam centers.”

Misori noted that the compensation package entirely excludes key staff members, such as deputy principals and lab preparation staff. This oversight has drawn strong criticism. Supporting these concerns, KUPPET Meru branch Executive Secretary Karuti Nchebere suggested that exam roles should be voluntary rather than mandatory. He advised teachers dissatisfied with the pay scale to avoid these roles until KNEC provides fairer rates.

Additionally, Misori criticized the government’s recent decision to keep Grade Nine students in primary schools, describing it as shortsighted. He urged the government to place these students in secondary schools, where facilities are more equipped for their needs. Misori also cautioned teachers against irresponsible drinking and encouraged them to pursue higher education to advance their careers.
