KUPPET: Move Grade 8 and 9 learners to High School.
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has introduced new recommendations to restructure the junior secondary education system. The proposal suggests a division of junior secondary into two categories, redistributing learning levels between primary and secondary schools.
In this suggested framework, KUPPET advocates for Grade Seven students to continue their education in primary schools while Grades Eight and Nine transition to high schools. This marks a substantial shift from the government’s existing model, where all three junior secondary school grades (Grades 7, 8, and 9) are within primary school premises.
Akello Misori, the union’s secretary general, emphasizes the need for a timely adjustment, asserting that Grade 8 should move to secondary schools. He urged addressing challenges specific to Grade 7, which currently operates within the primary school system. Misori proposes that the inaugural class of junior secondary school, set to enter Grade 8 in January, should move to high schools.
Highlighting concerns about the existing junior secondary school implementation, KUPPET argues that significant issues are evident in the one-year execution and it should be therefore not proceed further. The union also calls for a comprehensive study to assess the efficacy of teacher implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) at the junior secondary school level.
