KUPPET Addresses Rising Mental Health Issues Among Teachers in South Rift Region.
Teachers in the South Rift Region face a growing mental health crisis, primarily linked to gambling. The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has expressed grave concern over the escalating issues. These problems have led to a rise in suicides and hospitalizations due to depression, according to KUPPET officials.
Mary Rotich, the Executive Secretary of KUPPET’s Kericho Branch, recently spoke in Kericho town. She highlighted her deep concern over these tragic incidents. In addition, Rotich stated that the increasing trend of gambling among educators has had catastrophic consequences, including deteriorating mental health and fatalities.
“In our county, over four tutors have committed suicide, and several more are hospitalized due to depression. This situation is alarming, and we must act swiftly,” Rotich emphasized, underlining the severity of the crisis.

The mental health crisis among teachers impacts not only the individuals affected but also poses a significant threat to the broader community. Educators play a crucial role in shaping young minds. Rotich stressed the importance of community support and vigilance. Consequently, she urged colleagues and neighbors to watch for signs of distress among teachers and to provide immediate help.
“Our responsibility is to care for each other. Those showing depressive symptoms need immediate assistance,” she reiterated.
The KUPPET representative called for immediate action to address the root causes of this crisis. Therefore, Rotich suggested that comprehensive support systems be established to help teachers manage the stresses leading to gambling and subsequent mental health problems. Moreover, these support systems should include financial management education and mental health counseling.

The alarming situation in the South Rift Region serves as a stark reminder to education stakeholders, lawmakers, and the public to prioritize mental health and, consequently, create a supportive environment for educators. Furthermore, the well-being of teachers is crucial for the stability and success of the education system, and by extension, the future of the country.
As KUPPET continues to advocate for teachers’ mental health, it is hoped that their call to action will bring about tangible changes. These changes aim to safeguard teachers’ mental health and, in turn, enhance the region’s educational standards.
