KNUT Bomet Calls for Removal of Education CECM and CO Amid Teacher Disputes.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Bomet Branch is demanding the removal of the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education and the Chief Officer (CO). Desmond Langat, the Branch Executive Secretary, accused the two officials of arrogance, mistreating Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers, and sabotaging negotiations between the union and the educators.
Langat recently met with ECDE teachers from the county. During the meeting, he urged the county assembly to initiate the process of removing the CECM and CO to save the education sector. Furthermore, Langat pointed out that the CECM’s arrogant behavior and reckless remarks toward teachers are unacceptable. He also reminded the county assembly that the Members of County Assembly (MCAs) had ousted three CECMs and suggested that the Education CECM and CO should be next.
The issue of teacher dismissals was also addressed. Langat criticized the education CECM and CO for terminating the contracts of 127 teachers whose contracts had ended. He argued that these teachers, having served for many years, should have been confirmed in their positions rather than dismissed. Langat emphasized that ECDE teachers are KNUT members, dismissing any claims from other unions purporting to defend the teachers.

Langat called for dialogue between the county government and the teachers to address several unresolved issues. He stressed the union’s willingness to foster good relations between the parties. According to him, many issues, including the plight of the 127 dismissed teachers, need urgent attention.

In addition to the dismissal issue, the union refuted claims that all ECDE teachers in the county had received their salaries. Langat appealed to Governor Hillary Barchok for immediate intervention to ensure that the teachers receive their dues. He highlighted the importance of addressing these financial concerns to maintain the morale and welfare of the teachers.
In conclusion, the KNUT Bomet Branch is pushing for significant changes in the county’s education leadership. The union’s demands reflect a broader concern for the treatment and welfare of ECDE teachers in the region. Therefore, the call for the removal of the CECM and CO underscores the need for accountable and respectful leadership in the education sector. As the situation unfolds, the union remains committed to advocating for the rights and well-being of its members.
