KNEC Introduces Qualifying Test for Non-CBC Grade 9 Learners.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced a qualifying test for Grade 9 learners who did not follow the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). This test will determine their readiness for the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), ensuring a smooth transition into the new system.
Why Is KNEC Offering This Test?
Many students in Kenya have studied under alternative education systems. Some attended foreign schools, while others followed older curricula. KNEC wants to ensure that all learners meet the required academic standards before sitting for the KJSEA.
The test will assess core subjects, including Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, and Integrated Science. It will help educators place students in the right level based on their performance.
Who Will Take the Test?
The qualifying test targets learners who did not follow the CBC system but wish to transition into junior secondary school. This includes students from private institutions, homeschooling programs, and foreign education systems.
KNEC has confirmed that all candidates must sit for the test before registering for the KJSEA.
Test Structure and Schedule
The exam will take place online over three days, starting June 9, 2025. The schedule includes:
- June 9 – Orientation and system rehearsal
- June 10 – Mathematics (8:30 AM – 10:30 AM) and English (11:30 AM – 1:10 PM)
- June 11 – Integrated Science (8:30 AM – 10:10 AM) and Kiswahili (11:30 AM – 1:10 PM)
Students must report to designated assessment centers for orientation before the test.

How Will Results Be Used?
KNEC will issue result slips immediately after the test. These slips, signed by the Sub-County Director of Education, will be required for KJSEA registration.
Successful candidates will proceed to junior secondary school, while those who fail may need additional academic support before transitioning.
Concerns and Challenges
Some parents worry about access to online testing. KNEC has assured them that assessment centers will provide necessary resources. Education experts also stress the need for fair grading to ensure all learners receive equal opportunities.
KNEC’s qualifying test ensures that non-CBC Grade 9 learners meet the required standards before sitting for the KJSEA. This move helps maintain academic integrity and ensures a smooth transition into junior secondary school. Parents and students should prepare for the test by reviewing core subjects and attending orientation sessions.
