KNEC Addresses KCPE Exam Result Inaccuracies.
The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has promptly addressed concerns raised by certain candidates regarding inaccuracies in the recently released 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results. In a statement issued on Saturday, KNEC acknowledged the appeals it received regarding errors discovered through the Ministry of Education’s shortcode 40054.
The council’s CEO, Dr. David Njengere, highlighted instances where candidates encountered misalignments in Kiswahili marks and grades and issues with Science and Social Studies & Religious Education grades lacking proper plus (+) and minus (-) signs. Dr. Njengere attributed these discrepancies to “configuration issues” affecting results accessed via the SMS shortcode.
Assuring the public that the results on the official portal are accurate, Dr. Njengere stated that the problems were limited to candidates using the short code. The council has since rectified the configuration issues with the SMS service provider.

Additionally, KNEC received appeals from candidates with low marks, particularly in English and Kiswahili. Dr. Njengere confirmed that the commission has addressed 133 cases after a thorough review, and has appropriately updated the results.
Responding to reports of a school where all Science candidates scored 75 marks, Dr. Njengere explained that this was due to the nature of multiple-choice question papers. He emphasized that while it might raise suspicions of irregularities, there was insufficient evidence for KNEC to penalize the candidates without a supporting report on cheating during the examination administration.
In conclusion, Dr. Njengere urged candidates to collect their result slips from their respective schools and submit any appeals within the stipulated 30-day period, as outlined in the KNEC Rules of 2015 Legal Notice 131.
