Kenyatta University: Hospital Now Open to Students.
Students pursuing medicine at Kenyatta University now have a reason to smile as the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) now opens its doors to students for training. This is in response to proposals by Members of Parliament requiring the institutions to allow students from the university to learn.
According to the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Susan Nakumicha, they have met all the requirements to enable students to access the institution for training.
As such, students pursuing medical courses in the institution now have an opportunity to carry out their internships and training in the facility.
The Cabinet Secretary indicates that university administration will partake in hospital board meetings in line with recommendations by members of parliament.
Recommendations by the Public Investments Committee on Governance and Education require hospital administration to involve University administration in hospital management and administration.
The declaration eases tension arising from a standoff between hospital and university management regarding facility control and management.
According to Kenyatta University VC Paul Wainaina, even though the hospital facility is within the university, medical students have no access to the facility, even for training and research purposes.
The cabinet secretary for health then directed the institution to write to the Kenya Medical and Dentist Practitioners Council requesting an inspection of the facility for use in internships and training.
According to the Cabinet Secretary, ego and administrative and leadership supremacy battles, the university had not written the letter, resulting in a delay in the possibility of students accessing the facility.
A section of the committee holds that the Cabinet Secretary’s choice of words, indicating that it is improper, suggests that she should withdraw her statement.
The Cabinet Secretary indicates that she wrote to the Kenya Medical and Dentist Practitioners Council and the Nursing Council on behalf of the university, imploring the bodies to inspect the university hospital to open up opportunities for training students.
The university hospital can accommodate 100 students for training and internship to maintain the required student-patient ratio.
