Graduates Encouraged to Leverage Innovation for Sustainable Development.
Graduates must embrace innovation and technology to drive sustainable development. This message was emphasized during Meru University of Science and Technology’s 12th graduation ceremony, where Dr. Esther Muoria, TVET Principal Secretary, represented Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba.
Dr. Muoria highlighted the importance of integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into education. She explained that ICT transforms the learning environment, making it more interactive and engaging for students. By incorporating technology into teaching, institutions can better prepare students for an evolving job market. However, she acknowledged that there are challenges, particularly regarding infrastructure. Some regions still lack reliable internet access, and this limits the full potential of digital learning.
Dr. Muoria emphasized the need for comprehensive digital training for both students and educators to overcome these barriers. The government is already working on addressing these gaps to ensure that institutions like Meru University can provide their students with the necessary skills to thrive in the digital era. With a focus on improving infrastructure and reducing digital traffic issues, the future of education in Kenya looks promising.

In addition to the role of ICT, Dr. Muoria urged universities to align their research efforts with national development goals. He pointed out that academic research often lacks strong connections with industry, resulting in missed opportunities for impactful collaborations. Strengthening these partnerships will require enhanced dialogue, more funding, and increased collaboration between institutions and industry players. The government is committed to enhancing research capacities across all universities to foster innovation and drive sustainable development.
Dr. Muoria also acknowledged that keeping up with rapid technological advancements demands constant adaptation. Though these changes can cause disruptions, they are essential for equipping graduates with the critical skills needed for the future. Innovation, adaptability, and critical thinking remain key for graduates aiming to contribute to sustainable development.

He reminded them that they represent the university and should carry forward the values they have learned, including honesty, transformation, and professionalism. Professor Odhiambo encouraged them to take these principles into the world and make a meaningful impact.
In conclusion, the speakers emphasized the critical role of innovation and technology in shaping the future. Universities, graduates, and the government must collaborate to ensure that Kenya’s education system remains at the forefront of global development. By aligning research with national goals, addressing ICT challenges, and fostering innovation, the next generation of graduates can drive sustainable progress both locally and globally.
