Govt Nears Goal with 3,500 Grade 9 Classrooms Completed, Aiming for 18,000 by January.
With just two months left until Grade 9 students transition, the Ministry of Education has managed to complete only 3,500 classrooms out of its initial goal of 11,000. The government remains focused on achieving 18,000 classrooms by January to accommodate the new cohort, aligning with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework.
In August, the Ministry of Education set a target to build 18,000 classrooms to address the needs of Grade 9 learners. They plan to finance the project through two primary avenues: 11,000 classrooms with the help of development partners, and the remaining 7,000 through the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF). With collaboration from various sectors, the ministry aims to complete the project in time.

As of the latest update, Ogamba, a Ministry representative, confirmed that 3,500 classrooms are now ready for use. Additionally, another 7,500 classrooms are under construction, with progress ranging between 22% and 68% completion. These numbers reflect the government’s ongoing effort to meet the growing demand for classrooms under the CBC. Another 5,000 classrooms will be added through further partnerships between the ministry and other stakeholders, ensuring that all necessary facilities are ready for the January 2025 transition.

The CBC aims to streamline 60% of learners into STEM subjects, emphasizing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. However, junior secondary schools face challenges, particularly with limited laboratory access and basic equipment, which can hinder the effective implementation of the CBC’s goals. Ensuring that these 18,000 classrooms are fully equipped to support the CBC framework remains crucial to preparing students for STEM-focused learning and enhancing their practical skills.
