Government to Offer Managing Directors a Minimum of KCSE Grade D+ Training
The Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) has extended an invitation to managing directors and senior staff of small local construction enterprises to partake in comprehensive training to acquire the requisite competencies for overseeing the business.
In a notice published in the local dailies, KeRRA declared that senior staff and contractors will receive efficient training on how to perform road maintenance and enhancements.
The seminar will also address labor-based methods for bringing roads up to low-volume sealed standards. In addition, after finishing the training, the contractors will maintain roads in six counties: Laikipia, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Samburu, Isiolo, and Marsabit.
A section of the notice read, “In this connection, KeRRA now invites small-scale local construction firms interested in carrying out low volume seal road rehabilitation works in the above-mentioned counties to apply for consideration for training.”
KeRRA will use a portion of the funds from the European Union to assist the training program.
Essential Requirement
The Kenya Institute of Highways & Building Technology (KIHBT) offers a labor-based R2000 contractors training certificate. Managing directors with interest on selection in the training program must also meet three minimum requirements: a minimum KCSE grade D+ and above; an additional technical or professional training; and an additional training.
Site supervisors need to have at least one R2000 gravelling project supervision experience, a diploma in civil engineering, and a KIHBT training certificate.
The R2000 concept includes using local resources to maintain and repair roads to the greatest standards.
Duration of Training
Managing Directors will take part in a three-week program that includes one week of practical training on the Isiolo demonstration road and two weeks of classroom education in Isiolo.
Two weeks of practical training on the demonstration road in Isiolo and three weeks of classroom teaching will make up the five-week course for site managers.
Selection
Following an assessment of all applications, KeRRA will choose candidates for interviews who meet the standards. The second step will involve conducting written and oral interviews with candidates to assess their appropriateness and verify the correctness of the material presented.
Therefore, the final phase consists of confirming the accuracy of documents and advising KeRRA to issue an official invitation for training.
Following the selection process, fifty site supervisors and twenty-five managing directors will proceed to training.
According to KeRRA, “only contractors who successfully complete the training course will be considered to carry out low volume seal road works by labor-based methods.”
A commitment fee of Ksh50,000, or 20% of the training fees, will need to be paid.
Students may obtain up to 30 recognized points after completing the course. According to the National Construction Authority (NCA), contractors need to complete a training program worth at least 10 recognized points annually in order to renew their license to practice.
