Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua: Kenya’s Scandal-Plagued Deputy President.
Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua, Kenya’s Deputy President, has emerged as a controversial figure in Kenyan politics. Despite his initial rise fueled by anti-establishment sentiments, he now finds himself embroiled in impeachment proceedings just two years into his tenure. Known as “Riggy G,” Gachagua’s political journey reflects a blend of ambition and turmoil amid a challenging economic landscape.
Gachagua’s rise to power came during a period of discontent, where many voters sought change from established political dynasties. However, the 59-year-old has struggled as the economy falters and living costs soar. His alliance with President William Ruto has also faced significant strain, adding to his vulnerability as he confronts potential removal from office.
Accusations against Gachagua in the impeachment motion include corruption, undermining government authority, and fostering ethnic division. In a historic move, the National Assembly voted to impeach him, sending the motion to the Senate for further consideration. Analysts speculate that Gachagua’s downfall may stem from his unchecked ambition and refusal to align with Ruto’s leadership style.

Born on February 28, 1965, in Hiriga village within the influential Mount Kenya region, Gachagua’s parents participated in the Mau Mau rebellion against British colonial rule. He pursued a degree in political science and literature at the University of Nairobi, later undergoing paramilitary training and becoming a district officer overseeing internal security. This position allowed him to establish extensive political and business networks.
In 2017, Gachagua first sought office in Mathira, aligning himself with then-President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President Ruto. However, their alliance fractured before the 2022 elections, forcing Gachagua to support Ruto, which led to several politically motivated arrests on corruption charges. He famously recounted an incident in July 2021 when police raided his home, subjecting him to humiliation in front of his family.
Despite these challenges, Gachagua and Ruto successfully campaigned together, positioning themselves as anti-establishment candidates against the entrenched political elites. This remarkable transformation surprised many, considering Gachagua’s limited national presence before the elections.

However, Gachagua’s local popularity has recently backfired. Critics accuse him of relying too heavily on outdated tribal loyalties to maintain support. Additionally, allegations of corruption continue to plague his reputation. In 2021, he faced charges related to unexplained wealth exceeding 7.3 billion Kenyan shillings (about $57 million), but the case was dismissed once he assumed office alongside Ruto.
Now, lawmakers allege that Gachagua amassed 5.2 billion shillings (approximately $40 million) during his two years as Deputy President, despite his official salary of $93,000. He attributes his wealth to his family’s business ventures in real estate, hospitality, and construction.
Gachagua’s story reflects the complexities of Kenyan politics, where ambition, controversy, and tribal loyalties intertwine. As he navigates impeachment proceedings, his future remains uncertain. Whether he can survive this political storm and reclaim his position will depend on both public sentiment and the Senate’s decision. In Gachagua’s words, “All the problems that I am going through are because I am a truthful man,” highlighting the challenges of honesty in a tumultuous political landscape.
