Gen Z Protests Disrupt Academic Programmes and Music Festival.
The recent Gen Z protests in Kenya have had a significant impact on academic programmes and the Kenya Music Festival. Universities across the country were forced to postpone examinations scheduled for Thursday due to the protests. Institutions such as the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) and KCA University communicated the changes to their students.
In a circular dated August 7, 2024, TUK Vice Chancellor Prof Benedict Mutua announced the suspension of examinations scheduled for August 8. The exams will be rescheduled to a later date between August 12 and 16. KCA University also informed its students that all exams originally planned for August 8 will be moved to a later date, specifically between August 12 and 19.
This decision was not limited to TUK and KCA University. Similar communication was sent out by various public and private universities across the country. The protests have disrupted the academic calendar, causing inconvenience for students and faculty members.

The Gen Z protests also had an impact on the Kenya Music Festival, particularly in terms of travel plans. Students and teachers who were supposed to travel to and from Eldoret for the festival had to adjust their plans to ensure their safety and participation in the event. Regional festival officials issued a travel advisory, urging school buses to avoid the risk of getting caught in the demonstrations.
Through WhatsApp groups, officials warned teachers about the potential dangers and advised them to delay their departure from Eldoret to Nairobi until the situation could be assessed. On the other hand, teams leaving Nairobi for Eldoret were advised to proceed with caution and start their journey early in the morning to avoid any disruptions caused by the protests.
Many schools heeded this advice and made necessary arrangements to ensure the safety of their students. Some even departed as early as 4:30 a.m. to navigate the roads before any disruptions could occur. This precautionary measure deviated from the Ministry of Education’s usual guidelines, which typically restrict school bus travel.
Throughout the day, festival officials closely monitored the situation to ensure the safety of all participants. The protests created an atmosphere of uncertainty and required constant vigilance.
