Machogu: First Years to Receive HELB Next Week.
The processing of higher education funding applications for the first years is complete. Students in universities and Vocational should now expect to receive money in their account next week.
According to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, students should maintain peace in their learning institutions while waiting for the funds next week. This announcement comes when there are signs of unrest in institutions of higher learning, with students from some institutions taking to the streets to demonstrate against delayed disbursement of funds.
In his statement, the CS indicates that the Higher Education Loans Board has finished processing loan applications for the first years in institutions of higher learning under the new higher education funding model.
Further, he added that the Ministry of Education seeks to inform all first-year students that funds will be disbursed to their respective institutions next week, with student funds hitting their accounts from Tuesday. In line with this information, the ministry wishes to inform all first-year students to confirm their bank details for correctness.

The application for higher education funding ended on September 7, 2023. For a long time now, students have been waiting for the government to disburse funding, with institutions failing to meet their expenses due to fund insufficiency.
However, CS Machogu did not give further details on the fund allocation process.
In line with the new funding model, students qualify for bursaries and loans depending on the individual needs of the student and the course they are pursuing. This presents a significant shift from the previous model, where all students could receive bursaries while making annual payments amounting to 16000 as school fees.
Previously, students would fall within one of the four categories: vulnerable, extremely needy, needy, and less needy. However, the students now fall within five categories after a previous revision.
