Empowering Dagoretti North Students Through TVET Scholarships.
In a significant move aimed at changing the lives of underprivileged students in Dagoretti North, Nairobi, a new initiative is offering scholarships to those who missed university admission. At least 200 students who did not meet the cut-off grades for university entrance now have a second chance at furthering their education. Thanks to the collaboration between Brian’s Community Outreach (BRICO) and the TVET and Tertiary Education Scholarship Program, these students now have a path to success through skills-based education.
BRICO, founded by Brian Oduor, has recognized a gap in the traditional scholarship system. Most programs tend to focus on top-performing students, leaving behind those who struggle academically, particularly orphans and those from low-income backgrounds. Oduor noted that while the Joint Admission Board sponsors students with specific grades, many deserving students miss out because they don’t meet the required marks.
“Our goal is to reach those students who fall short academically but deserve a chance to succeed,” said Oduor. By partnering with various TVET institutions, including the Intraglobal Training Institute, BRICO aims to provide skills-based training that can equip these students with the tools they need to thrive in the job market. The focus is not on academic performance but on practical skills that can lead to employment opportunities.

The launch of the initiative brought relief to many parents, who expressed their gratitude for this unexpected opportunity. They see this scholarship program as a lifeline for their children’s futures, especially for those who felt that failing to meet university entry requirements marked the end of their educational journey. The initiative also represents a shift in thinking, as it highlights the importance of vocational and technical education, which has often been overlooked in favor of traditional academic routes.

By offering these scholarships, BRICO and its partners challenge the notion that only students with high grades deserve access to further education. Instead, they open doors for students who may have struggled academically but have the potential to excel in hands-on, technical fields.
The TVET scholarships provided by BRICO and the TVET and Tertiary Education Scholarship Program are giving hope to students who were previously written off. This initiative not only addresses educational inequalities but also provides a sustainable solution for students seeking alternative pathways to success. By focusing on skills-based training, it ensures that these young individuals can build meaningful careers and contribute positively to their communities.
