Division in KNUT Leadership Over Education CS Nominee.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is experiencing a split in leadership regarding the appointment of Migos Ogamba as the new Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education. This nomination has sparked debate within the union, with varying opinions on Ogamba’s suitability for the role.
Some KNUT leaders, including Secretary-General Collins Oyuu, have endorsed Ogamba’s nomination. Oyuu expressed optimism about Ogamba’s potential, stating that his ability to engage with all stakeholders will be crucial. He recognized the education sector’s complexity and thanked President William Ruto for choosing Ogamba. Oyuu believes that Ogamba’s leadership could bring significant improvements to the sector, although he acknowledged the challenges ahead.
At the Siaya branch annual general meeting held at Nyasanda Primary School in Ugunja, Siaya County, Oyuu emphasized that the nation’s attention is now on Ogamba. Consequently, he stressed the importance of adequate and timely funding for schools and educational institutions. Branch Executive Secretary Alex Dunga supported Oyuu’s positive stance and shared his hopes for Ogamba’s success.

Conversely, the union’s second national vice-chairman, Aggrey Namisi, has voiced strong opposition to Ogamba’s nomination. Namisi argues that Ogamba’s background as a lawyer may not be sufficient to tackle the challenges faced by the education sector. In addition, he believes that the role demands someone with a robust educational background who can quickly adapt without requiring extensive orientation.
Namisi also pointed out that Ogamba’s nomination might be influenced by political connections. He noted that Ogamba was a running mate of former CS Ezekiel Machogu in the 2022 Kisii gubernatorial race.. He raised concerns that this nomination could represent a continuation of Machogu’s policies rather than introducing fresh perspectives.

Namisi’s criticisms highlight the need for a CS who can swiftly drive necessary changes, particularly as the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) is at a pivotal stage. With the Kenya Kwanza administration halfway through its term, Namisi fears that a CS without a solid education background may struggle to settle into the role effectively.
The division within KNUT underscores the broader debate about the qualifications and background needed for the education CS role. Furthermore, as the nomination process continues, it will be essential for the new CS to address these concerns and, consequently, demonstrate their ability to meet the sector’s needs. Moreover, the outcome will be closely watched by educators, students, and the general public alike.
