Caution Urged Against Student Alcohol Use by Parents and Teachers.
Parents and teachers must caution children against alcohol use, both at school and home, due to its detrimental effects. Kenyenya Sub-County Officer Commanding Police Station (OCPD) Sepe Gomba emphasized this point during a public meeting at Kerongorori location in Kisii County on Monday.
Gomba highlighted troubling reports of some teachers and parents allegedly sending students to purchase alcohol, which often leads them to start consuming illicit brews like chang’aa. He warned, “Parents and teachers who lure innocent children into drinking beer and smoking are breaking the law.” This behavior not only sets a poor example but also contributes to a growing problem in the community.
With the August holiday approaching, Gomba urged parents to take time to discuss good behavior, hard work, and law obedience with their children. He stressed the importance of adults embracing Christian teachings and values to set a positive example, fostering a better nation both now and in the future.

The OCPD expressed concern over the high use of chang’aa in the area, which has resulted in many school dropouts. He criticized the local chief and assistants for their laxity in addressing this issue but commended parents who reported such concerns to his office. Gomba provided his phone number for security issues, encouraging the community to look out for each other and maintain vigilance.
He called on clan elders, the church, and community policing groups to collaborate during the holiday to monitor youth activities and guide them towards harmonious living. Additionally, he urged teachers to support youth welfare by advising parents to engage their children in study groups and positive activities that promote good character development.

Gomba lamented the decline of traditional African communal upbringing, where every child was considered the responsibility of all parents in the community. This approach fostered higher discipline and safety standards compared to the modern, technology-influenced lifestyle.
In conclusion, parents and teachers play a crucial role in preventing student alcohol use. By working together and setting a good example, they can help guide children towards positive behavior and a brighter future
