Belio Kipsang Reaffirms Ban on Third-Term School Activities.
The Ministry of Education has reinforced its ban on specific school activities during the third term, emphasizing the importance of maintaining examination integrity. In a directive issued on September 3, Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang instructed regional, county, and sub-county education directors to enforce the existing ban strictly.
Originally introduced in May 2016 by former Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, the ban aims to curb cheating during national exams. This prohibition covers various activities, including prayer days, school visits, half-term breaks, sports events, prize-giving ceremonies, and annual general meetings. The ministry’s decision stems from minimizing interactions between students and external individuals during the critical exam period.

Kipsang’s circular reiterates that the ban, established in January 2021, remains effective. “The prohibition on the mentioned activities continues to be in force. It is essential that all concerned individuals and organizations comply with this directive,” Kipsang emphasized. As a result, the directive aims to ensure that students remain focused on their studies without distractions, which can lead to exam malpractice.
The ban has significantly reduced the chances of cheating during the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations. By limiting external influences and preventing unauthorized access to exam materials, the ministry seeks to uphold the credibility of these crucial exams.
As the third term progresses, the Ministry of Education’s commitment to enforcing the ban on specific school activities highlights its dedication to safeguarding the integrity of national examinations. Therefore, by adhering to this directive, schools nationwide play a vital role in ensuring a fair and transparent examination process for all students.
