Babu Owino on Increased University Fee.
Babu Owino, a member of parliament from Embakasi East, has appealed to university student leaders, urging them to use nonviolent demonstrations to voice their concerns about the university fee increase.
According to Babu, “Student leaders all across the country ought to come out and hold peaceful demonstrations to protect parents from paying heavy university fees that the Government has hiked.” Many students are concerned about their ability to enroll in the educational establishments of their choice due to the implementation of the new funding model.
Some students have voiced their displeasure, pointing out that some educational institutions have increased tuition costs despite warnings from the government. The government warned universities and other institutions of higher learning against increasing their service rates and threatened to penalize them and withdraw any signed Memoranda of Understanding they had.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Universities Fund, Geoffrey Monari, made the following statement: “Universities have entered into agreements with us regarding the fees that they charge. If they decide to raise their prices, these contracts will be void, and they will have to deal with the repercussions.”

At this time, sixty percent of the students placed by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) have applied for a scholarship or a loan.
However, only 80,000 of the potential 265,000 students who are qualified to receive these benefits have applied as of yet.
The Ministry of Education has pushed the deadline for applications to higher education to October 7 for students who KUCCPS places. This is so that all qualified students can gain admission to higher education. Ezekiel Machogu, the Cabinet secretary for Education, recently issued a call to action to all qualified students to apply for scholarships and loans formally through the Higher Education Fund portal.
