A Guide to Diploma in Civil Engineering.
A diploma in Civil Engineering gives learners the technical skills to provide services on a civil construction site. It equips learners with the knowledge to design, construct, and manage a construction site. In Kenya, many TVET institutions are accredited to offer the course. Unlike universities, TVET institutions rely on a standard syllabus designed by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).
Goals of a Diploma in Civil Engineering
Upon completion of the course, learners are expected to:
- Acquire skills that will enable them to manage civil engineering sites, including roads and bridges.
- Develop the ability to design and construct structures within the civil engineering works threshold.
- Develop the capacity to fit into a civil engineering technician role.
- Provide a foundation for civil engineering training.
Entry Requirements
To enroll for a diploma in Civil Engineering in any TVET institution in Kenya, one must attain a minimum grade of a C- (Minus) in KCSE. However, it is essential to note that there is no set cluster subject requirements. Sound knowledge of mathematics and physics is an added advantage.
Individuals with background knowledge in a related field, such as a craft certificate in Civil Engineering, are also eligible for enrolment.
Modules
The program is divided into three modules or levels and lasts three years. To progress from one module to another, a student must pass the Kenya National Examinations Council exams for that module. If a learner performs poorly in three units, they fail the entire module and have to redo all units. If a student fails one or two units, they can proceed to the next module, but they have to redo the units with a fail.
Career and Academic Progression
After completing a diploma in Civil Engineering, a student acquires sufficient knowledge to manage a construction site. It also acts as a stepping stone to higher levels of learning, including a bachelor of Civil Engineering, where an individual gets an opportunity to specialize in an area of their choice, including:
- Structural engineering
- Water engineering
- Construction engineering and management
- Geotechnical engineering
- Environmental engineering
- Materials engineering
