2024 KCSE Shockers: How Little-Known Schools are Redefining Academic Excellence.
The 2024 KCSE results delivered unprecedented surprises, showcasing the incredible performance of schools previously flying under the radar. Merishaw Academy, based in Isinya, Kajiado County, emerged as a national sensation with an impressive mean score of 10.57. This achievement dethroned long-established academic powerhouses, signaling a paradigm shift in Kenya’s education landscape.
The success stories of these lesser-known institutions reveal the growing potential of schools outside the traditional giants. Their accomplishments not only inspire but also challenge the long-standing norms of academic dominance.
Merishaw Academy’s outstanding performance in the 2024 KCSE exams made headlines nationwide. Excelling in six subjects, including Christian Religious Education and Physics, the school established itself as a new beacon of academic excellence. Principal David Kariuki attributed the achievement to strategic planning, diligent staff, and significant growth in student numbers.

“We set a goal of 8.5 and exceeded it, achieving a mean score of 10.57,” Kariuki shared proudly. “This is just the beginning.” The school’s rapid expansion, from 96 students in 2022 to over 800 in 2024, underscores its commitment to fostering excellence through both capacity building and robust academic frameworks.
Other schools that outperformed expectations included:
School Name | Mean Score |
Kisima Mixed Secondary School | 9.71 |
Riokindo Boys High School | 9.62 |
Nyakongo Boys High School | 9.21 |
Moita High School | 9.16 |
Sheikh Khalifa Secondary | 9.13 |
Rockfields Senior School | 9.01 |
These performances highlight the remarkable progress of institutions previously overshadowed by academic giants. Schools like Kisima Mixed Secondary and Riokindo Boys have shown that consistent effort and strategic initiatives can lead to exceptional results.
Despite these successes, accessing the KCSE results proved challenging for many schools. The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) portal experienced significant traffic, causing delays. While celebrations began sporadically on Thursday evening, many schools waited until Friday to access their full results.
Nevertheless, the optimism was palpable. Principal Kariuki noted, “Our success reflects the hard work of both staff and students. We are redefining excellence and setting new benchmarks for others to follow.”
This year’s results underscore a broader transformation in Kenya’s education system. Excellence is no longer the preserve of elite institutions. Instead, it has become attainable for all schools willing to invest in quality education, resources, and a culture of dedication.
The Ministry of Education has pledged its support to ensure these emerging schools sustain and enhance their performances. Such backing could bridge resource gaps and empower schools to compete at a national level.
